The obverse depicts a left-facing bust of Liberty wearing a coronet inscribed “LIBERTY”.
The reverse shows a majestic heraldic eagle design holding a shield and arrows.
This scarce gold $5 issue features the famed CC mint mark of the Carson City Mint below the eagle.
These coins each contained nearly half an ounce of pure gold, giving them high intrinsic value.
With a diameter of 21.6mm and weight of 8.36 grams, these are thicker but smaller than a quarter.
Only 7,675 examples were made, making the 1870 CC a desired rarity for collectors today.
Pricing ranges from $35K in VF up to $175K+ for the few mint state examples known to exist.
